What Is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic Acupuncture is a non-surgical technique based on the ancient art of medical acupuncture. Acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese medical research on the flow of Qi (Oxygen) and Xue (Blood) through distinct channels very similar to nerves and blood vessels. These channels have been identified by the Chinese and used as a healing system for thousands of years. They traverse our muscles, bones, nerves, and cells. Within them, Qi flows and is in constant motion. Blocked Qi causes pain, disease and dulls the spirit. Qi that flows freely brings vibrancy, health and beauty. Acupuncture stimulates Qi to flow to areas where it is deficient and borrow from where it is in excess.

As people begin to age, the facial muscles become weaker, skin loses its luster, and collagen and elastin production decreases. Many factors contribute to the visible signs of aging including sun damage, smoking, stress, diet and lifestyle.

Cosmetic Acupuncture enhances appearance naturally by stimulating the flow of internal Qi, improving facial muscle tone, lifting sagging tissue, tightening the skin, stimulating the natural production of collagen and elastin, promoting muscle relaxation, and relieving tension.

What Can I Expect?

During an initial intake, your patterns of disharmony will be determined through discussion of medical history, diet, digestion, lifestyle and sleeping patterns. Cosmetic concerns are addressed and discussed. Medical acupuncture is applied to specific points on the body to harmonize the patient’s internal constitution. Then, approximately 50 facial needles are applied for the Cosmetic Acupuncture procedure. These needles are placed at very specific points on the face that address the patient’s internal imbalance and increase Qi and Blood flow. Once acupuncture is completed, the patient rests for 20-30 minutes. Toning, moisturizing and lumphatic massage are utilized, depending on each patient. Skin care and customized herbal formulas are discussed.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

10 treatments in 5 weeks is recommended for everybody. However, smokers, drinkers and sun bathers usually need 15-20 treatments. Typically, after the initial 10 sessions, patients choose to follow-up with one tune-up session every one to three months, and/ore repeat their series in two to three years. This may not be necessary however, as results may last up to five years.

Does It Hurt?

No. Needles for Cosmetic Acupuncture are extremely fine and are typically painless. Some facial points may be somewhat sensitive, but most patients report very little to no pain.

What Other Conditions Does It Treat?

Cosmetic Acupuncture isn’t just for fine lines. This ancient technique is also successful for acne scarring, facial paralysis, surgery recovery (especially face-lift surgery), and discoloration.

Are There Side Effects?

This treatment carries very little risk. However, some patients may experience slight bruising. Be sure to tell your acupuncturist what medications you are taking and skin care products you are using. We recommend scheduling sessions at least three to five days prior to any big event.
